Well, I can say that IGNITOR have many common things with RAZOR FIST. The band that I presented in my previous review, but they definitely belong on the other side of the coin. IGNITOR, as RAZOR FIST, try to play 80’s influenced metal with some modern touches that are mainly detected in the use of harsh vocals. The bad thing with IGNITOR, in my opinion, is that they try to put a lot of things in their compositions and the final result can be described as chaotic at least. They have some good ideas, but they are not combined in a way that they will flow naturally. They gave me more of the sense that they are fragments that are thrown randomly in every song. By listening to “The Spider Queen” I had the sense that I was listening to a band that tries to play classic metal, but they don’t feel comfortable and sure in this field. They have to work more and be more focused on what they want to do with their music in order to achieve something that will be worth our attention. The only song that I really enjoyed on this album is the song entitled “Rune of Power”.

Do you like your metal to have screaming guitars and high – pitched vocals? Would you like to listen to a band that is both technical and full of passion for true heavy metal? If to all these, you answer is a certain yes, then you have to stop by and check out this U.S. metal band. RAZOR FIST plays heavy/speed metal with an 80’s touch, but also have a fresh and modern approach to their sound. If you can imagine a band that combines elements of groups like AGENT STEEL, EXCITER, SACRED STEEL and 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, then you have a pretty good image of what you will listen to on this album. Generally, the album is great and I can’t notice many negative things on it. The only thing that I would like to listen to in their next releases is a little bit of more variation. Anyway, “Metal Minds” is a 100% inspired metal album that will offer you many hours of quality headbanging. So put this album on your CD player, grab your air guitars and get ready to give some hell to your neighbors. A release from a band that breathes for heavy metal music!!!

Well, the name might mislead you... Actually, I thought that I had to do with another Viking metal band, but HJALLARHORN play even more interesting music... at least for my taste. This band's -which was formed back in 1993 and now releases its debut album (!?!?)- sound is baptized in the 80’s speed/thrash metal genre. In fact, I could have easily believed that “Iron Clad Soldiers” was released back then, if I hadn't learned anything about them from the info sheet their label gave me. Anyway, to make a long story short, I have to say that if you like the “Kill ‘em All” era of METALLICA and bands like EXCITER and MOTORHEAD, then here you will hit the jack pot! These guys have good ideas and the whole album is a proof that HJALLARHORN have listened to a lot of their favorite bands and albums, before entering the studio and giving us this release. A good album from a band that stays focused on its target from the start till the end. The 80’s metal freaks out there will enjoy this release! No doubt this album has to be checked out by you…

As a fan of hard rock music I was and still am fond of the European sound. Maybe because I am from Greece, maybe because I never was too much into the blues? Anyway, that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate a good release from the U.S. band LYNCH MOB. I think that they are quite known to the people that like hard rock music, so I have nothing to write about them that it is not already known. So let’s focus to the album. “Smoke and Mirrors” is their new effort and it sounds like a crossover between the following genres: 70’s rock with lots of blues in it along with some southern rock elements. It reminded me a bit of THUNDER and WHITESNAKE, but I think that in comparison to the aforementioned bands, LYNCH MOB lack in the volume of their songs and the fact that they don’t have the catchy melodies that will capture your senses. “Smoke and Mirrors” is a pleasant to listen to album with good ideas thrown in it, but as I said before they miss the catchy moments that will make you notice them. It’s the kind of album that after you finish listening to, you forget it since you have already listened to many as this one before.

If I told you that out there exists a band with the name THE POODLES and the play the heaviest metal that you have ever listened to, probably you wouldn't believe me and you would do fine. Anyway, on their third album the sound of THE POODLES is as predictable and cheesy as their name. A band that has dedicated heart and soul into poser metal, but sometimes also has some ACCEPT references to its sound (“I Rule the Night” is such an example). “Clash of the Elements” is not a bad album for such kind of music, but on the other hand it is nothing that if you ignore, you will miss. A typical specimen of commercial/poser metal with many mellow moments and ballads... From a point on it becomes repetitive and it's hard to continue listening to it. At least if you are a true metal head... It could have been a happy summer listening, but the summer is almost over... Anyway, I don’t want to tire you much. “Clash of the Elements” is a mediocre album with a few good moments. Not the kind of album that you give 15 – 20 Euros to buy, I think…

Formed in Sweden in 1992, NAGLFAR has five full-length releases total
since then. "Pariah" is their fourth full-length. They've gone through
quite a few lineup changes since their first coming together as an official
band. Four members are featured on this one. Their latest release entitled
"Harvest" is the only other album that I own out of their entire discography.

HEARSE from Sweden play death 'n' roll. Now does this make them an extreme or a more melodic band? Hmm... hard to say since each aspect of their music has a fair share and comes to the surface playing the front role in turns. However and perhaps because of the fact that I'm used to listening to more extreme stuff I'd say that "Single Ticket to Paradise" is closer to the hard 'n' roll side of their music rather than their death metal nature. Unless we take into consideration the very first era of death metal which was closer to thrash metal and wasn't that extreme and aggressive... I'm sure this is the death we're talking about, since their music has a beautiful retro sound. HEARSE's music brought to my mind MOTORHEAD, not because their music sounds anything like them, but because it has a similar vibe and party like energy. The vocals are harsh and rasping, but not too extreme and the guitars are simply stunning delivering a beautiful heavy rhythm section and some amazing elaborate solos. "Single Ticket to Paradise" isn't an ordinary, common release, but it's something special, so I guess it also requires a quite open mind. This is an album that both the extreme and more melodic metal fans can enjoy. The last thing I want to mention here is that the CD will come with a bonus DVD "Live in Holland" containing 5 live tracks, a massive picture chapter and the video for the track "Sundown".

MINSK is a city in Belarus, but these guys have nothing to do with that country and in fact come from the U.S.A., something that's crystal clear if you listen to even a few tunes from their album... and by that I mean that, as we all know, some of the strangest and weirdest bands out there come from the U.S. MINSK's "With Echoes in the Movement of Stone" is no exception and consists of some big and totally chaotic and strange songs in the wider genre of doom metal. You see so far in my review the words strange and weird keep appearing and this is because I have no better way to describe this band's music. I could also use horrid, cause this is exactly how it sounds like to my ears... horrid and incoherent and listening to this album has started becoming a torture for me. There's only one thing in favour of the band and that's the fact that they have a pretty personal and distinctive sound. There are some nice riffs dispersed here and there and some moments that brought to my mind DANZIG, but the end result is so horrible for my taste, that this has ended up being a burden for me.

This band from Belarus has one of those monikers that work fine on their own as a descriptor of the band's sound and musical direction. The vibe that comes from this band name is dark and gloomy as is their music which belongs to the doom death metal genre with some melancholy gothic touches. The vocals for the most part are extreme growls, but some clean parts along with a few recitations also exist. The tempos are slow to mid, but almost never fast and are supported by a heavy rhythm section. The guitars weave beautiful dark patterns and there are some melodic lines that stick to your mind with their haunting tunes. All in all, "The Statues' World" is an interesting atmospheric doom death metal release that the fans of this genre will definitely enjoy!

THE EXTINCT DREAMS is a Russian based band formed about three years ago and "Ars Moriendi" is their debut official work that came after two demos both released in 2007. The sound this quintet is here to serve and deliver to us is heavy as hell doom/death metal with plenty of ambient elements in their music. The compositions are slow and I mean extremely slow, not even mid paced, the guitar patterns and riffs are gloomy and the rhythm section is heavy. The vocals are deep growls and the atmosphere of this album is really dark and ominous... these are the main ingredients of this release. Perhaps all this sound like interesting qualities some of you look for on ambient doom/death metal albums, but what I didn't like here is the pretty bad production especially when it comes to the sound of the bass guitar, it is quite distorted and above all the fact that the compositions sounded to me rather monotonous, flat and common. I could only recommend this to the die hard fans of the genre.

SCULPTOR is a one man band from Russia which was founded in 2006 and so far released a demo and an EP. "Dark October" is the band's debut full length work that was released about a year ago and was limited to 500 copies. The music presented here is raw doom metal with a few death metal touches mainly in the vocal department. Sculpto's singing style consists of screams and growls for the most part, without some clean recitations lacking here and there. The songs have their own identity and they are heavy as hell with a really depressive, doomy atmosphere. They also contain some really interesting moments and catchy riffs that stick to your mind. However, I'm split in two regarding this release... there are the things I just mentioned that I liked a lot, but there are also some weak moments that are colourless and plain... moments that have nothing interesting and for me ruin and debase the great elements of SCULPTOR's music. "Dark October" is a really good effort showing a band that can do a lot in the future, but personally I'd prefer the songs to be shorter in duration and a bit tighter.

What do you think of calm and relaxing music? If you are into it and you like your metal music to have thick, impressive orchestrations, melancholy themes and enchanting melodies, then one of the best bands I've listened to recently is definitely DIATHRA from Belarus and undoubtedly applies to your taste. "My Endless Sorrow" is their sophomore studio work and I have to say that if you like majestic, dark melodies with a gothic touch and all this interntwined with death/doom metal themes, then your search for good music is over! DIATHRA's compositions are mesmerizing with amazing, elaborate melodies that will calm your soul and mind travel you to dreamy landscapes. The beautiful ethereal vocals of Marina are a big advantage for the band, elevating the end result even further. The production is also very good and clear, allowing you to listen to everything that's going on in the songs and the cover artwork is extremely beautiful and fitting to the band's sound.

Since their formation in Germany of 1994, DARK FORTRESS have managed to complete 5 full-length releases. This current album has a new vocalist who goes by the name of Morean. He is briefly featured on their past release entitled "Seance". Their previous vocalist Azathoth departed from the band in 2007 due to personal reasons (source: http://thetruedarkfortress.com/bio.htm). The band decided to recruit Morean because of his lyrical and vocal abilities. "Eidolon" has six members altogether. Morean (as previously mentioned) is on vocals, Asvargyr on guitars, V. Santura on second guitar, Draug on bass, Paymon on keyboards, and Seraph on drums. CELTIC FROST's vocalist sings as a guest on the song "Baphomet." The band made a video that you can view on YouTube called "Edge of Night" (overall source: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=180415). This full-length concept album falls under the category of melodic black metal. The reason why it is termed "melodic black metal" is because the music displayed here which feature guitars that carry with them an eerie/evil concoction of riffs, in unison keyboards, screeching vox, and warping bass. There are some blast beating drums as well as double kick, which goes along with the music. The entire release has a symphonic echo vibe to it. In terms of the sound, there are some killer riffs which display some ultra fast picking melodies and leads. The guitars have a huge block of distortion to them. The bass on this release you can actually hear blended well with the music. Everything seemed to fit. That would include the production, sound quality, overall playing and huge display of talent! There is a reason why "Eidolon" is considered to be a concept release. This is because according to the band it deals with nine chapters that "describes the initiation, dehumanization, and unearthly rebirth of a transcending soul by mirror magic and astral projection" (source: http://thetruedarkfortress.com/bio.htm). The lyrics are difficult to grasp because of this subject. There are no cover songs whatsoever. The lyrical concept was chosen by Morean. DARK FORTRESS shows an array of ability for this particular genre of metal. Everything seemed to fit well together. There are a few songs that are a little boring. But for the most part, "Eidolon" is a fine piece of work. The words here are quite creative and the music combined with the concept are amazing. Don't miss out on this album!

Damn, I had never suspected that I like EDGUY so much, especially the good old EDGUY (OK I should stop now, before I start crying like a chick that sees Leonardo Di Caprio drowned for the tenth time in Titanic). In their third work these Germans deliver an album that EDGUY could have easily put out after their “Mandrake” album and didn’t decide to follow a more hard rocking career. Even the singer of the band Markus Engelfried reminds of Tobias Sammet to the point that even when Tobias will listen to him, he will break his head trying to find when he sang these songs. Now, I am asking you... is it a sin to remind musically of another band? Well, personally I think it's a bigger sin to condemn a band because it reminds you of another one, especially when you like their songs and let me tell you I liked this album! I prefer to listen to SAIDIAN than to thousand HELLOWEEN clones that are out there. “Evercicle” is a pleasant album to listen to that balances between melodic metal and power metal. It is an album with a very good vibe. So I will excuse the lack of personal sound and I’ll give them a…

I am a fan of the 80’s metal music, this however doesn’t mean that I am a kind of fanatic that despises modern metal music or that I am prejudiced in any innovation in the heavy metal sound. I just think that few are the bands that can bring new things in their sound and do it sincerely. Most of the times, the bands change their sound, only because they want to be even more successful. Here is where BLOODBOUND trouble me. They are a heavy/power metal band that has released two very good melodic heavy/power metal albums and they were quite recognizable by the fans for the music they were composing. Suddenly, in this release they have decided to change their sound and nothing reminds me of the good old BLOODBOUND except for the amazing performance of their singer, Urban Breed. You see with this release the band introduces in its sound many melodic death metal and metalcore elements. All these make them sound more like a clone of IN FLAMES with clean vocals. The thing is that this has already been done by too many bands and also BLOODBOUND fall in the trap of repeating ideas that we have already listened to from other bands and in a much more interesting way. I really don’t understand, why they decided to change their sound so much, except that they want to make an opening to the U.S. market, where this kind of music (melodic death metal/metalcore) is quite successful. As for me, this album doesn’t exist in the BLOODBOUND discography…

CRADLE OF FILTH (COF) have come a long way since they first formed in the United Kingdom back in 1991. Originally, they started out playing death metal. Then, they have evolved into a gothic metal group and at present are playing extreme gothic metal with some hints of black metal influence. Dani Filth is the only original member left. The full actual title of this new release is "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder -- The Life and Crimes of Gilles De Rais". It is a concept album researched and written by COF's vocalist. The songs fit into the genre of extreme gothic metal and symphonic black metal. These categories are newer to the band. Their present style seems to fit well within these particular types of metal. There aren't too many bands that play this genre (extreme gothic metal). CRADLE OF FILTH does a good job with properly executing it. Sound-wise, it has some aspects of their previous release back in 1996 which is "Dusk... and her Embrace". Dani's vocal outputs aren't as high-pitched as they were back then. There's a mixture on this album of high end vocals along side hoarse throat. Guitar by Paul Allender is superb. There were very catchy rhythms and leads demonstrated. No doubt this release outdoes their previous one which is entitled "Thornography" (2006). Many guest vocalists are featured, even Dani Filth's daughter on a few tracks. The other female vocalists are incredible especially on the song "The Death of Love". Also, Doug Bradly as narrator gave the album an eerie sound to it. Keyboards by Mark Newby-Robson put CRADLE OF FILTH into a more symphonic aura. It is thoroughly enjoyed this entire cast. In terms of the words, there was a great display of intelligent lyricism. Reading through the lyrical content is very challenging because of the topic chosen. Surely it took a lot of research to touch on this 15th century serial killer, sexual deviant and Satanist Gilles De Rais. This album has no cover songs on it. All of the music is newly composed by the band as a whole. The limited edition digipack contains 10 bonus tracks. The overall performance by the band puts it into one of CRADLE OF FILTH's finest works. "Dusk... and her Embrace" is their reigning release. However, "Midian" (2000) and their prior "Thornography" (2006) are also great outputs. Favorite tracks on their latest include "Shat out of Hell", "The Death of Love", and "Sweetest Maleficia."

Finally some good heavy metal music! LION’S SHARE might not be the most known band from Sweden, but they are persistent and they exist over 10 years. Lately they have added the charismatic singer from ASTRAL DOORS, Nils Patrik Johansson, who gives to the band an extra boost. Also the sound of the band has become more straight forward and aggressive. So, in “Dark Hours” you will get classic 80’s metal with a modern and dynamic production. The band's sound is definitely inspired by bands like JUDAS PRIEST, Rob Halford (of the last 2 solos albums), BLACK SAABATH and DIO (the track “Heavy Cross to Bear” which is one of my favorites on the album is a tribute to this great singer). “Dark Hours” is an album with variety that keeps the interest of the listener from its start till the end. But above it all it's a traditional heavy metal album with great ideas that will offer you lots of headbanging and great sing along moments.

LILLIAN AXE is a band with a long career in the music industry. This is their new official full – length album that's in fact their ninth studio work. The band plays a kind of music that balances between classic rock and hard rock with some metal touches from time to time. Their sound is solid, they have some interesting ideas and above all they manage to combine heaviness and melody in a very good way. Also, their themes are not the typical that you listen to from a hard rock band, since “Sad Day on Planet Earth” can be described as a dark album for the kind of music they play. LILLIAN AXE without being something extraordinary, do stand out from the numerous bands of our days that play hard rock and rock music. I have to recognize to them that they have a personal sound! The weak point on this release, though, is that they don’t have an up – tempo song... A song that will stay on your mind from the first listening. Anyway, this is a descent release and the fans of LILLIAN AXE will surely enjoy it…

DIVINE HERESY are one of those new bands that are especially successful in the U.S.A. and lately in Europe as well. Their sound is a mixture of metalcore with death metal. As musicians they are extremely confident and their playing is quite technical. The problem is that their album lacks in variety. OK! By listening to the first tracks of the album you are really impressed, but as the album proceeds you have the feeling that all the songs sound the same from a point on. I think that their compositions work better as units and not as parts of a whole album. DIVINE HERESY gave me the sense of a band that can do more than the things they give us on this album. It really sounds as a poor attempt, especially if you consider the skills of the musicians that are members of this band. They have to work more on the variety issue and I am sure that in the future we will hear much better works from them…

These guys from Sweden have chosen a rather weird title for their debut album... they've named it "End", but let me just tell you that given the right push, this band can reach far. They simply got it! Their music is tight and dynamic... so powerful and relentless that will satisfy even the most demanding metal heads. Now music-wise the band lies within genres with metalcore perhaps being more prominent, but still not the only one. You'll also trace some melodic death/black metal touches, a few hardcore tunes and some progressive cuts and changes here and there. This is a really powerful combo that knows how to compose catchy fast paced songs that are filled with ferocity and aggressiveness! The production is also top notch, crystal clear, allowing us to listen to all the instruments equally and the cover artwork is beautiful and fitting to the band's sound. BRING YOUR OWN KNIFE is definitely one of the best bands of this genre I've heard in a long time!

STRYPER is one of the most famous Christian metal bands that emerged back in the 80’s, becoming so well known due to their more commercial and straightforward sound. Actually they are one of my favorite groups ever. OK! They were flirting more with poser metal, but almost on every album of theirs in the 80’s they also included some good heavy metal songs. “Murder by Pride” is their second album after their reunion and things here are much better than their previous release. It seems that STRYPER, somehow, got the message and on their new album they left aside their experimentations with alternative rock. They saw that there is nothing bad to make a turn to your roots, especially if you have some good ideas and that’s exactly how their new release sounds. “Murder by Pride” is definitely close to their 80’s sound, since it has all the elements that their fans loved in this band. Hard rock songs, heavy metal songs, some more radio friendly ones and ballads. In general the album is good, but my only objection is that the band has gathered all the mellow songs in the end of the album and this works against the variety that every release should have. Anyway, STRYPER have released an album that respects their history and I am sure their fans will love it…

This is the case of the good student that loves so much and follows his teachers. I can imagine the members of HAVOK from U.S.A. sitting on the front seats of their classroom and not losing a lesson from their favorite teachers like METALLICA (“Masters of Puppets” era), EXODUS, TESTAMENT, ANNIHILATOR and SACRED REICH. Then one day after they have graduated from the thrash metal school, they thought they were ready to create their own music which has the same structures and carries the influences of their grand masters. HAVOK is a bay area sounding thrash metal band that delivers some good music without being something extraordinary or unique for the genre. In the lack of innovative elements though, they offer us a solid rhythm section with some very interesting and well played lead guitars along with nice melodies and solos. To make it simple, HAVOK play thrash metal music, because first of all they are fans of this sound and they are 100% sincere with what they are doing. So, if you like this genre and you like their aforementioned influences, you will have a hell of a good time listening to the album, but nothing more. Now, if you are a more demanding listener and you do want to listen to something more original, then better try to listen to something else…

Well, I don’t know much about COVERED CALL and after listening to their new album, I don’t want to learn anything about them. It is not that they are so bad, but they are too typical and predictable for their genre. They play the kind of music that can be described as radio friendly rock/hard rock. To make it more simple, they are just a pop band with guitars. I can understand the need to play more melodic, but not to the point as to become so mellow that even the ones that listen to you, start having second thoughts whether you are a rock band or not. Personally, I prefer my rock and hard rock music to have some volume, some power and I don’t care if it will be appreciated by the masses. If an artist thinks only how to make music in order to sell more copies rather than to satisfy other needs, then he/she is not an artist and he/she must try his/her luck as a merchant. “Money Never Sleeps” is a good and well polished commercial product that has nothing personal on it, since this might hurt the selling of the album. Definitely a release for no demanding listeners…

The debut full length work of this Belgian based power combo is a fact and has set the elm really high for these guys, since they've managed to release a really tight and in your face album filled with volume, power and guts! Their sound falls into the wider metalcore category, though VHAN infuse their rendition with lots of groove and thrash touches as well as with some progressive passages and rhythm changes. Like I said earlier the words that describe "Hero Versus Hero" are tight and in your face with all the songs being pure head banging anthems that the hardcore and metalcore fans worldwide will simply love. The musicianship and the skills of the band members are superb and the vocalist offers some exceptional and full of rage interpretations that enhance the extremity and ferocity of the album. This may be an independent work, but it has nothing to envy from label releases since both the artwork and the production are top notch! Check them out!

It is sad, but true (hey I'm ripping off METALLICA here :P) that the European metal genre recently has become synonymous to iterance and boredom. It is true that most of the new bands don’t do anything more than copy the well known bands of this genre and most of the big names lately have reached the level of inspirational “bankruptcy”. So, when I received this album, I was not very anxious to listen to it, since I was thinking that it will bore me to death by repeating the same melodies again and again and I wasn’t so impressed by the fact that Mr. Kotipelto and members of SONATA ARCTICA are participating here. Anyway, when I listened to “Gather the Faithful”, I had a really good time and I enjoyed it a lot. It seems that the experience that the musicians of this band have in the power metal genre, worked beneficially for the final result. So, here you will listen to all the elements that made us appreciate the Finnish power metal scene. You will listen to good melodies, clever orchestrations and a fresh approach to the genre. There is no doubt that “Gather the Faithful” is one of the best European power metal releases, not only for this year, but of the last years. An album that people who love European power metal must have and also a release that will be liked even by people that are not devoted to this genre, but have a good taste of melody...

I'm simply stunned and at loss for the right words here... that's the impact "Invisible Wounds" had on me. I have this promo a couple of months now and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've been listening to it every single day! This is definitely one of the best releases of this year for me and it's an album I'll continue cherishing and listening to! Now let's move on to the facts, cause I could just go on raving about INMORIA's debut album. The guys behind the band are no strangers to the metal scene since they are all TAD MOROSE musicians with the exception of the singer, who is the one and only and one of my all time favourites, Mister Charles Rytkonen of MORGANA LEFAY. I can't deny that his deranged, insane, passionate and so special and original vocals and singing style are a really important reason why I love this album so much. In fact they enhance the originality and innovative nature of this release and take it to aces high. Now music-wise I don't think I have anything to mention regarding the skills and technique of the band members. They are all superb musicians and offer us amazing performances that are accompanied by a top notch production. There isn't just one term that can encompass clearly and absolutely what "Invisible Wounds" is all about and the genre it belongs to, but using the term dark power metal with some modern touches is a pretty good way to grasp this album's essence. Add to this some vague MORGANA LEFAY resemblances and you're even closer. The dark haunted and insane atmosphere of the songs is fused with some beautiful dreamy parts, the modern touches that are mainly delivered by the keyboards are great and the dual vocals, in some songs, between Charles and the female vocalist make the end result breath-takingly beautiful! Don't tell me you expect me to mention here any favourite songs? Cause then I'd have to mention the whole album!

There are some times that even die hard metal heads like me (OK, just kidding here) need to listen to more easy going music. OUTLOUD is a band that is formed by metal musicians (Bob Katsonis, Mark Cross to name few), but they play a kind of 80’s influenced hard rock/pop metal. They really have very good melodies and catchy choruses that keep you hooked from the start till the end of this album. While I was listening to “We'll Rock you to Hell and Back Again” I didn’t have the feeling that I was listening to a new band, but to an album that was already classic back in the 80’s. It is really amazing, how the musicians manage to sound fresh and yet keep this 80’s vibe to their sound. People who like 80’s hard rock and metal bands that had a more commercial sound will definitely fall in love with this album. I really enjoy it and I think that with the proper distribution and promotion this album will earn the recognition that's worth from the fans of this genre. Also on this album you will discover a new guitar talent that hears in the name Tony Cash, who is the main responsible for the compositions here. It’s time to party people…

This is the second live album that EDGUY release. The first one came out back in 2003. The new live album was recorded in Sao Paulo in 2006, during the Rocket Ride World Tour. This is a double CD release that includes songs from their whole career along with some AVANTASIA tracks (Tobias Sammet's project band). This live is also released on DVD, for those that don’t want to have only the sound but also the visual experience of the show. The things that impressed me in this live is that it is a genuinely live recorded show. At least it hasn’t “suffered” a thorough process in the studio in order to give a false image of the band on stage. The other thing is the good interaction that exists between the band and the audience. It almost makes you feel that you are in the stadium too. The bad thing is that Tobias Sammet is not offering us his best performance during this live. His voice sounds a bit tired and I have listened to him live so I know he can do a much better job. Anyway, this is a release that applies mostly to the fans of the band, the others should better discover the band from a best of or by buying one of their albums (note: you have to check out “Vain Glory Opera” in my opinion).

ONSLAUGHT is one of the most known and highly acclaimed thrash metal bands that hail from Great Britain. They started as a band back in the 80’s and in 1989 they released the album that back then seemed to be their last one. However in 2000 the band was reactivated and in 2006 they released their reunion album entitled “Killing Peace”. Now, in 2009 they have decided to release their first official live album (it is impressive how a band with such a history on its back, only recently managed to release a live album). This live album was recorded at last year’s "Damnation Festival" in Leeds. The band played songs that come from the following albums: 1)” Killing Peace” (“Killing Peace”, “Destroyer of Worlds”, “Seeds of Hate”, “Burn”), 2) “The Force” (“Let There Be Death “,”Metal Forces”,” Demoniac”) and 3) "Power from Hell" (“Damnation/Onslaught (Power from Hell)”). As you can see on your own the band has performed live mostly songs from their latest album and secondly from their second release “The Force”. I think that for a first live album, all the fans of the band would like to listen to more songs from the 80’s. The sound and the mixing of the release are also great, but you listen to the audience only in the beginning of each song. This is a big minus for this release, since it makes it sound more as a best of compilation than a live recording. The songs are great, but I can’t give them a big grade since here the live feeling is totally missing ...and after all this is supposed to be a live show. Finally, this CD comes along with a DVD which contains various film footage from Damnation Festival including live tracks, fan cameras, interviews...

Here in Greece we have a saying that the a good day starts in the morning. Well, this saying fits perfectly to the album of U.D.O., which is entitled “Dominator” and will be released on 21 of August. The opening track (“The Bogeyman”) doesn’t leave you much space for thoughts, it is a heavy metal fist that grabs you by the balls and makes you bang from its start till the end. The album musically goes pretty much in the same heavy metal way as the first track, with only 2 tracks being a bit different (and yet interesting), the one is called “Devil's Rendezvous”, which is probably the most bizarre tune that U.D.O. has delivered to us so far and the other one is the power ballad entitled “Whispers in the Dark” and closes the album. All in all “Dominator” is one of the heaviest albums that U.D.O. has released in his career and includes all the ingredients that the fans of this magnificent performer want to listen to. Check out one of the best classic heavy metal releases of this year, and put the volume to the maximum while you are listening to it.

I know there are still plenty of people out there who dig the original, old school thrash metal sound and all that thrash metal stands for, not just music-wise, but also its philosophy and ideology. Well, I'm really happy to announce that such bands still exist and the most recent addition to the genre answers to the name of RAMMING SPEED. A great and eloquent name for a band, conveying everything their music is... in your face, aggressive thrash metal filled with catchy riffs and lots of speed moments offering us some pure head banging anthems. All this is wrapped up with an honest rebellious atmosphere that guarantees your satisfaction! "Brainwreck" has two different qualities... on the one hand it can make you feel excited and wild and on the other hand while you are enjoying it you'll find some really thought provoking and interesting themes their lyrics deal with. That's what I call a true thrash metal essence and it's obvious that RAMMING SPEED have an abundance of it!

OK! When I first heard the name I thought it was a band deeply inspired by BLACK SABBATH when DIO was their frontman, however things are much more complicated. The music of SOUTHERN CROSS has so many influences and styles in it, that it will be very hard for me to say they belong to a specific genre. The truth is that SOUTHERN CROSS use any style they want in order to give to their music variety and create vivid emotions to the listener. So, don’t be surprised when you will listen to power metal combined with melodic death metal and after that some jazzy and 70’s rock touches. All these, though are so tightly and perfectly combined that the passage from the one part to another is almost natural. The main element of the band’s music, though, in my opinion is the theatrical touch that all of their songs have. A theatrical feeling that brings to mind the way SAVATAGE and QUEEN used to build their songs. All these are very well supported from a very professional production that has nothing to envy from the expensive productions of other bands that belong to big record labels (this means that the band spent a lot of money in order to release such an album). A band that is worth your attention! Especially if you like progressive power metal genre, then “Down Below” will impress you in a very pleasant way. Bands like SOUTHERN CROSS bring a new strength to the metal foundation, which lately has become to clichéd and predictable, mainly cause the labels care only to sell copies and "catch" the latest trend in our sound. Support, a talented band like SOUTHERN CROSS and I am sure they will pay you back the favor…

AXXIS is a band with a big history in the metal scene, since they were formed back in the late 80’s and since then they have a constant appearance in the metal scene. They might never become a huge name, although their music is more easy going than other metal bands, but they earn the respect of the metal fans for their persistence to deliver to the audience the music they like to play. For those that know the band, this album won’t be a surprise, since the group plays the same way they got us used to so many years with a bit more modern production (especially in the way the guitars sound). Now for you that don’t know AXXIS, this album will give you the chance to discover them, since they play melodic heavy metal based on the keyboards, with some hard rock touches. I have nothing more to say, since “Utopia” is a typical AXXIS release that you might like either more or less than their previous releases, but the sure thing is that it sounds good and you will have a good time listening to it, especially if you are into the melodic heavy/power metal genre (I definitely prefer them from the thousand STRATOVARIUS, HAMMERFALL and HELLOWEEN clones that are released every day). Just the fact that they come from the 80’s and manage to keep this 80’s feeling in their sound, that gives them a vintage “taste” is a big thing! By the way, “Underworld” is for my taste the best song of this album…

Another great release from Russia!!! “Escape to the Dreamlands” is the debut album of a very promising band. It is not easy to categorize their sound to a specific genre, since they mix heavy metal, doom and symphonic metal parts all together in order to create music that its main characteristic is variety and the plentiness of emotions it creates to the listener. This album created to me the same impact as the debut album of HAGGARD (“And Thou Shalt Trust... The Seer”). No doubt that it has the same dark dreamy feeling while you are listening to it. This doesn’t mean that here you will listen to a clone of HAGGARD. No! The band through its influences (amongst them are DARK TRANQUILLITY and MY DYING BRIDE) creates a recognizable sound, but above all they have created an album of a high artistic value. One other thing that I liked a lot, since I am big fan of H.P. Lovecraft is that the band bases the concept of this album to the cthulu mythology. “Escape to the Dreamlands” is a beautiful release that manages to capture both the dreamy and nightmarish atmosphere and to create something that not only you enjoy to listen to, but also haunts you. Try to listen to them…

There are some monikers that are very popular in metal music and thus pretty common. One such name is UNHOLY and actually if you make a quick search on the Internet you'll come across several bands from all over the world with this band name. This particular UNHOLY is a U.S. based band offering us a fusion between melodic death metal and metalcore... a rather successful and yet I'd say ordinary recipe for the current scene. So without having much to set them apart or above the rest of the bands, UNHOLY are pretty good at what they are doing and that's nothing less than delivering great and in your face metal filled with aggressiveness and vast amounts of energy. Their riffs are catchy and the vocals suit like a glove to their compositions enhancing the extremity and dynamics of the songs. "New Life Behind Closed Eyes" is a decent and pleasant piece of work with an incredible production that will surely please the melodic death and metalcore fans.

There are bands that when they decide to play a specific metal genre, this genre binds them and makes them sound so typical and predictable that the final result ends to be mediocre. On the other hand there are bands and more specifically musicians that from the first time you listen to their music you know they were meant to play this way. “Dance of Druids” is a release of such musicians. All the things on this album sound so well put, that the final result is not just a pleasure to listen to, but also captivates your mind and travels you to the soundscapes that FFERYLLT create for you (us). Their folk metal is combined with some symphonic influences and all these create an epic and glorious atmosphere which is present in all of their compositions. You will also find that on their debut album there have participated well known musicians from this genre (like Vladimir Cherepovsky of ARKONA, Pablo Allen of SKILTRON and many more), a fact that proves the quality of this band. “Dance of Druids” is not just another folk metal release, it's a well written mature metal album that everyone, no matter what kind of genre likes the most, will enjoy. Finally, I would like to mention the wonderful work that Stygian Crypt Productions did for the packaging of this album. The CD package is so beautiful that gives further value to your money. Ah, one last thing, except for the nine compositions of the band you will listen to the cover of ENSIFERUM’s “Lai Lai Hei” (from their “Iron” album) and ELUVEITIE’s “Inis Mona” (from their “Slania” album). Check this out, we are talking about a new force in the folk metal genre…

I am not a big fan of the folk/Viking metal genre, especially the recent one, because it has become too cheesy, repetitive and boring. It seems though, that there are many people in our days that like this kind of music. ATHLOS, in general, I think belongs to this genre with the only exception that the lyrics are not inspired by the Viking mythology, but by the Greek one. Actually, ATHLOS is the project of Polydeukis who is the founder of the Greek epic metal band SACRED BLOOD and who also participates in bands like FOLKEARTH and ZION. The band, now, sounded to my ears as a mixture of influences that come mainly from these known bands: FOLKEARTH, VIRGIN STEELE (in the way the keyboards and the piano sound), BATHORY (just listen to the song “Aegean Blue”), MANOWAR and GRAVE DIGGER (the acoustic guitar in the “Areth kai Pomh” made me whisper the first words of “The Clans are Marching”(Rebellion)). All these sound great, but in my opinion although there were moments the band convinced me with their atmosphere, there were other parts that I think the band exaggerated a bit and tired me. First of all, I think that the rhythm guitars should have more variety, also the dialogue parts needed to be more dynamic, because I couldn’t understand in many parts what the speakers where saying and finally they had to reduce them a bit, because they abruptly reduced or cut the natural flow of the music. I believe that the band did a better job when it was playing straight heavy metal than when it tried to create atmosphere. I can understand that the band spent a lot of time creating that, but the final result is a bit mediocre. They can’t pull off the expectations they create with their endeavor.

When I first laid my eyes on the cover artwork of this release I thought I was dealing with an alternative rock band or something like that because of the two cute looking animals and the bright yellow and pink colours. So I gave the CD a spin and in my surprise the first song kicked off with a really wild scream while the song was actually pretty intense and rather aggressive. Music-wise these newcoming Swedes deliver a mixture between hardcore and screamo with the latter being extremely prominent, especially in the way the vocalist sings. Now if you are fans of these genres I'm pretty sure you're going to dig this stuff, but if you fall more into my category then I don't think you'll find anything significant here. Don't get me wrong "Panda Penguin Vol. 2" is a decent album... still it's too common and ordinary. Nothing new, pioneering or innovative here and that's why I insist that this will only appeal to the crazed hardcore and screamo fans.

VERDICT DENIED probably is the Greek metal scene's best hidden secret. You see, in my country most of the people have a weird way of thinking. They want to see if you succeed abroad in order to support you. The musicians that are in VERDICT DENIED, never had the promotion that other musicians had in Greece, despite the fact that many of their releases couldn’t escape mediocrity. Anyway, it is never too late to support a good metal band and VERDICT DENIED are more than that. They belong to the thrash metal genre, but instead being restrained by this genre, they use it in order to expand it. Believe it or not, “Condamned” is a very different thrash metal album from the typical ones that you are used to listening to lately. The guys are not afraid of mixing progressive metal structures with female vocals and everything else they find suitable and the result is not only great but also very fresh and new, even for people like me that have listened to lot of metal music (just check the song “Black Tango” and you will understand what I mean). “Condemned” is not only a very promising beginning, it is an album that presents us a band that can refresh the thrash metal genre without “escaping” from it. A release that along with the new one of ARTILLERY is the best for the thrash metal genre for this year. By the way the mixing and the mastering of the album have been done by Jeff Waters (it is not strange since the band seems to honor its ANNIHILATOR influences in a couple of compositions on this album). I recommend it.

I think that up to now, many of you must know the name FOLKEARTH, at least as the project band in which musicians from many different bands participate. Now, if you don’t know what exactly FOLKEARTH play, well that’s easy to answer. They play a kind of folk/Viking metal with lyrics inspired from the European history. In general, the band has released good albums, but on this one, which is number six, things are not so promising. First of all, I have to tell you that the lyrics in this release are not so much about the Viking mythology, so the cover artwork with the Viking warrior doesn’t represent exactly the themes that the band sings about here. Anyhow, the still make songs for other epic themes. All these up to now sound very good and promising, but that’s where the good things end. The production and the mixing of this album are terrible, to the point that they weaken the final result. Not even a band that releases a demo in our days has such a lousy production. Except for that, most of the compositions are dull and boring without creating any epic feelings to the listener. The only ones that worth the attention are the following 3 (from an album that includes 11 compositions): “Freedom or Death (Kosovo 1389)”, “Fatherland” and “In Blessed Days”. No doubt that this is the worst moment of FOLKEARTH as a band.

FOLKODIA are actually the same band with FOLKEARTH. At least most of the band members are the same with FOLKEARTH. They also play folk/Viking metal and that’s where I have started to wonder which the reason was to create another band that moves on the same musical paths with your main band... Anyway that’s a question that I have to ask in the interview that I will do with the guys. Here is a place where I can share my musical impressions from the listening of the album. “In a Time of Legends” is no doubt a much better release than the last album of FOLKEARTH which is entitled “Fatherland”. First of all the album has a better production and mixing without being perfect, but anyhow it gives an atmosphere to the album. The compositions now are good and I think that the fans of the genre will enjoy listening to them. As for the influences, I have to say that the band sounds as a mix of ANCIENT RITES (latest period), TURISAS, CRUACHAN and WAYLANDER. They might not be something outstanding, but they are serious and their compositions prove their true love for the musical genre they serve. This album might not attract the interest of fans of other metal genres, but it will be a pleasant experience for those who love everything that has to do with warriors, legends and epic battles.

Well, I didn’t know THANEVER up until I received this official release. I don’t know if they had released anything before this, but the band seems to be bonded and has a long time of experience on its back. THANEVER balance somewhere between the hard rock and heavy metal sound. Their influences come from the 70’s and 80’s hard rock scene with some touches of N.W.O.B.H.M. (there are also some bits of punk/rock influences). Also their singer, Domina (yes it is a female fronted band) gives a personal touch to the sound of the band in the way that she sings. This album includes 8 compositions and all are very pleasant to listen to and I think that the fans of the hard ‘n’ heavy sound will appreciate the effort of this band. All in all, “Domina’s Nightmare” presents us a band that has the maturity of the professional musicians and the enthusiasm of a newly starting band. If you want to contact the band for more information you can send them an email here: thanever@gmail.com

I am in the happy position to review a band that plays traditional heavy metal. Who would have imagined that one day would come when the traditional metal bands would be so rare! On the other hand it is good that the classic metal sound returned to the underground in order to survive. Anyway, after reviewing so many folk, Viking, progressive and whatever you like metal, MIDNIGHT IDOLS with their 80’s metal sound were an oasis for me. OK! They are not something extraordinary, but they have a passion for this music and I believe that every fan of this sound will find something interesting in this release. The sound of the band carries influences from the N.W.O.B.H.M scene, along with some IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST and early METALLICA influences. The thing that makes them distinguish is the great vocals of their singer and their passion for heavy metal. Yes, my friends this is a band with balls and if you buy this release you won’t be disappointed. The tracks that I love are: “Necropolis (City of the Dead)”, “Satan's Lullaby” and “Sworn to the Night”.

I try to keep an open mind even with sounds and genres I don't like, but there are occasions like this that I just can't help it and can't appreciate the quality this release may have for the fans of the sound. Am I preoccuppied? Perhaps I am, but I tend to disapprove of every band that seems to follow a certain recipe after planning it all out well and thoroughly. I want to feel music comes out effortlessly and not after careful consideration in order to be mellow and commercial enough. That's what I get by these Swedes and it's one extra reason why I can't say many nice things about "Terra In Cognito", an album that incorporates literally all kinds of rock from alternative to indie to punk and to even some grunge touches. I suppose the rock fans may find something appealing here, but I don't think the metal heads will find anything interesting. The best moment of the album was the cover version of Britney Spears' song "Toxic". They did a really nice work and really transformed the song. Still, though, I'll pass!

CONQUEST OF STEEL can be categorized as epic metal... if I had to describe their sound in few words. However, their epic metal is not so easy to digest. They don’t use words like dragons, swords etc accompanied with some happy melodies. Nope! Their sound is more profound and I think that it will be appreciated mostly by people that love the 80’s and present underground epic metal scene. It is obvious from the first hearing of the album that the band’s sound is deeply plunged into the N.W.O.B.H.M. along with some IRON MAIDEN and THIN LIZZY touches. All these, though, are played with a very idiosyncratic way, a fact that makes them have a recognizable sound. CONQUEST OF STEEL’s sound is a close relative to the sound of bands like BROCAS HELM, SLOUGH FEG and TWISTED TOWER DIRE (as they used to sound on their debut release). On their new album, now, except for the known elements that characterize their sound you will also notice that the band has chosen to play most of their compositions in mid – tempos and sometimes they even sound quite doomy. I don’t know why, but after listening to the whole album I was left with the sense that its atmosphere is similar to the “New Dark Age” of SOLSTICE. This is a very bizarre album that people with specific taste will appreciate (note: if from the above mentioned bands the only ones you know are IRON MAIDEN and THIN LIZZY, then this release is not for you) and I think that it gives CONQUEST OF STEEL a cult status. My only objection lies with the production of the release, because I would like it to have a more dynamic sound…

Howard Leese is considered to be a veteran in the rock scene having worked with some huge names like HEART and Paul Rodgers. Especially when it comes to HEART, he was an important reason why the got so famous and released so many good songs and in fact he was often referred to as the band's secret weapon... and I guess this is how and why he decided to name his first solo work like that. Howard Leese has been in the music business for approximately forty years and it wasn't until now that he decided to release his debut solo work that features musicians like ex-RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE singer JOE LYNN TURNER, on "Alive Again" and "Hot to Cold", Keith St. John on "In These Eyes", Paul Rodgers on "Heal the Broken Hearted", Keith Emerson on "French Quarter", Andrew Black on "I've Been Leavin' you" and ex-SURVIVOR vocalist JIMI JAMISON on "The Vine". There are also some instrumental songs here that give you the chance to understand better and more clearly the beauty of his compositions. His playing and his songs are filled with emotion and are really sweet, so if you are into melodic rock, then this is an album I think you should check out!

This is the third and last part of the albums that REBELLION decided to release and deal with the history and mythology of the Vikings (a theme that has been exhausted by the metal bands of every kind, but still seems to move the listeners of this music). The third part of these releases deals with the mythology of the Norse men and more specifically it talks about the way they believed the word and the gods created and ends with the well known to all of us Ragnarok (the final fight among gods, humans and giants). On the music part of this album, REBELLION stay faithful to their sound with the exception that in some songs (like “Asgard” and “Thor”) they have some atmospheric parts that give a touch of majestic tone to the songs. Also there are some songs that have a thrashy edge. Genreally, “Arise: From Ginnungagap to Ragnarok” is a pleasant album to listen to, but I think that I prefer a little more the previous two albums of this trilogy. One other thing I believe that doesn’t work in favor of this release is the production which is quiet noisy and chaotic. That has as a result that the listener loses the details of each composition and from a point on you think that all the songs sound the same (note: you better use headphones while listening to the album in order to enjoy it completely. To the positive and strong points of this release belongs once again the passionate singing of Michael Seifert. A good album in general, but not the best way to close a very interesting and ambitious trilogy. My favorite songs from this album are: “Asgard”, “Thor” and “Prelude”.

"City‘s Gonna Burn" was released in 1984 and it signifies the beginning of this important U.S. band. Their style and sound has suffered some changes from more classic heavy metal forms to a bit more power/glam approach on their next release, "No Stranger to Danger", which I personally believe to be their worst album, to more straightforward Bay area thrash metal forms. This album in particular has managed to fuse in a really beautiful and catchy way the best elements of this band and create a kick ass heavy/thrash album that sounds killer and fresh even nowadays. There are several reasons why I recommend this release to you... first of all it's really hard to find, secondly it's one of the most famous debut albums in thrash metal history and it's been remastered with an updated booklet. One extra reason why you should get your hands on one of the copies is that it also contains two exclusive bonus tracks, new live recordings of “Liar” and “Fire in the Hole".
